With so much uncertainty in the world, heaviness, and change (progress!!), it feels a little funny to write about my latest jewelry collection. Just like my Favor Collection I released back in March, the Perla jewelry has come together at such a unique and fitting time.
I was inspired by natural pearls, and how their creation is synonymous with the idea of hardship. For a pearl to form, a grain of sand enters the shell and as a defense mechanism causes the fluid to create a coating around it. Over several years and many layers, the beautiful shiny pearl is made. I keep thinking about how much change is happening and how much I am (un)learning about myself and the world around me. I am hopeful that so much of it will be good and that even though it may take time and many layers, something beautiful and of great value will come from it.
These beauties are made from our smooth white stoneware clay, fired with a shiny high fire glaze, and then pearlized. The iridescent finish on the shiny glaze is a pearl luster that is applied and fired for a third time, similar to how we add our gold luster. I love that these are not actually pearls, but are a humble dot of clay that has gone through the rigorous process of creation, sanding, and three separate firings - some over 2000 degrees.
The gold is 14-20 gold filled, nickel free. The post on the Muse earring (below) comes in either sterling silver or titanium.
